getting trained

matt, jake, and i attended our second dog obedience class on sunday. while at home, i had been convinced that jake knew all his commands and that it was quite possible that he is the smartest dog ever. at class, i discovered that the dog might just have some sort of learning disability. jake finds it difficult to focus, even when treats are proffered. his ability to consistently associate a specific command with a specific action that he should perform, which would then lead to a specific reward is questionable at best. at home, matt and i could stand on opposite sides of the room, and take turns calling, "come, jake!" and then giving him a treat. we could then say, "sit, jake" and he would sit and get another treat. at class, he was more like the tasmanian devil on a leash. at least he didn't try to hump any other dogs.

While at just such a dog obedience class my dog lifted his leg and tried to pee on another dog. Just marking his territory.

some dog- and i'm not saying it was ours because we certainly didn't see him do it- let out a few little hershey squirts on the floor. no one stepped up to take the blame, so i ended up cleaning it, which made me - or rather, my dog - look like the guily party.
